A British drug firm which will sell erectile dysfunction medicine in the US on Monday said it has launched a trial in Britain.
It said the erectile dysfunction drug, Pfizer's drug Viagra, is licensed by the FDA for the treatment of impotence.
The firm said it had received an order for the trial from the US government and had applied for approval of the new medicine.
The drug is expected to be sold in the United States on Monday and will be sold to treat patients in the US with the disease, the firm said.
The company said the trial was intended to evaluate the efficacy of the drug, which is sold under the brand name Cialis.
It said the drug was not approved for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
The firm said the trial was not designed to evaluate how well the drug works in the patients with impotence.
It said the trial would have to be performed in patients who had previously failed attempts to get help for impotence or those who had had problems getting or keeping an erection.
The trial has been given approval by the FDA and is scheduled to run for up to three months, it said.
It said Pfizer had no plans to market the drug in the US or overseas, although it is expected to be sold in Canada and other countries.
The company is in talks with the FDA over a possible marketing plan for the drug.
The US market for the drug is estimated at $2 billion, with a quarter of that coming from the European market, the firm said.
The firm said the study was an "annex" and was not a definitive trial. The company did not provide details about how much it would charge for the trial.
The company said it was reviewing the matter and will conduct further clinical trials. It said it was in the process of meeting with regulators and the US Food and Drug Administration.
The company said it had consulted with pharmaceutical companies and was reviewing a potential marketing plan for the drug.
